Of all the characters in The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Mayor's always been my favorite. When I saw that they made a Head Knocker of him, he quickly became one of my most wanted bobbleheads. When I saw the stock picture, he looked perfect- no exaggerated features like many others in the Head Knockers line, and he bobbled at the waist, which is pretty cool. He'd fit right in with some hula dancers off someone's dashboard. Unfortunately, it looks like NECA's bad reputation for sloppy paint goes back to at least 2003, when this was made.First I'll get the good out of the way- this Head Knocker looks just like the Mayor. In fact, it's a little more accurate than a few of the more recent figures of him. The big caboose, tiny feet, four fingers, everything's right about him. Both of his faces are here too- the happy face in front, and worried face in back. Some people have said that you can spin the head around to display him as you wish, but unfortunately this isn't the case. He's stuck in the happy position. I'm fine with that, but it would've been a great feature to have the option. He comes on a stone base with the podium and a book (with blank pages). And the hat is removable: the Mayor has a metal peg sticking out of the top of his head, and you carefully put the hat in place. If you've had experience with Gentle Giant's Star Wars statues and busts that have lightsabers, you'll have no trouble with this. From a distance, this is a killer Head Knocker, and one of the better NBC ones. But the paint nearly kills the joy for me. The paint on the ol' Mayor here is almost as bad as my bobblehead of Russell from Up. There are literally splatters of grey paint on his body, almost as if someone was using water colors on him. Black from the jacket bleeds into the white shirt, and the black lines that separate his teeth look drawn in with an ultra fine point Sharpie...and some go off and into his lips. The fine lines on his swirled eye are bad, as is the simple red X on the black widow tie. How bad is it that the best paint on this whole thing belongs to the base he stands on? The real kicker is that the worried face on the back of his head is decent, but with all the action taking place in the front, it'd be kinda silly to display him with his back to everyone. His hat is also something to watch out for. It's very thin and light, and could be easily broken if you force it too much on the peg. Finally, the bobble feature is a mixed bag. The spring is positioned low, and the back of his rear clanks against the legs, not giving much motion after 3-4 wobbles.I feel like I'm being generous in giving him 3/5 overall. You'd be better off with the Jun Planning Mayor figure if you want a really good one to display, but for bobblehead collectors, this is all we've got. You'd think for collectibles celebrating the 10th anniversary of NBC, they would've put a little more effort into this. Here's hoping my Oogie Boogie doesn't suffer from the same problems...
